Counselling in English Budapest - Short-term, focused support for expats, students and international professionals

Counseling (or “counselling” in British English) is a short-term, goal-oriented process where you work through a current difficulty with a trained psychologist. Typical counselling involves a few sessions (often 3–5) and concentrates on a specific issue — not a long, open-ended therapy process. Sessions are practical, confidential and aimed at helping you gain clarity, make decisions and take the next steps.

What a counsellor does (and what to expect)

  • We listen and reflect. I provide a safe, non-judgmental space to explore your thoughts and feelings.
  • We look at the problem together. Through questions and feedback I help you see the situation from different angles and surface new insights.
  • We don’t decide for you. As a psychologist I don’t give orders or make life choices for you. Instead I support you to reach your own decisions. (I will offer practical guidance only when essential.)
  • Short, focused work. If we find that your difficulties need deeper, longer-term psychotherapy, I will recommend the appropriate next steps.

Who benefits from counselling?

Counselling is often helpful when you are facing a specific life challenge, for example:

  • major life changes (moving country, career transition)
  • grief, separation, or divorce
  • receiving or supporting someone with a serious diagnosis
  • needing clarity before a big decision
  • persistent stress, overwhelm or sleep problems
  • low mood, anxiety, or emotional tension
  • recurring conflicts at work or in relationships

Many of my English-speaking clients are expats, international students and digital nomads in Budapest seeking short-term, practical support while adapting to life abroad.

The counselling process — simple and practical

Counselling typically follows these steps:

  1. Clarify the current problem — we define the issue you want to work on.
  2. Identify real needs — we explore what you need to feel better or to act differently.
  3. Develop a practical plan — together we create steps or strategies that fit your life.
  4. Take action — you try out changes; we review and refine them.

During sessions I use supportive questions to challenge assumptions, highlight new perspectives and help you convert insights into everyday choices. Over several focused sessions many clients already feel significant relief and renewed confidence.

Practical notes about counselling in Hungary

Public sector access to short-term counselling is limited in Hungary; most counselling services are provided in private practice. I offer both in-person sessions in Budapest and secure online counselling for clients living in Hungary or abroad.

Ready to try counselling?

If you’d like a short, confidential consultation to see if counselling is a good fit, you can book an initial 45-minute intake. This session helps us define the issue and choose whether counselling or psychotherapy is the right path.
